Presentazione del congresso

La gestione clinica dei pazienti che hanno dolore all’articolazione temporomandibolare e ai muscoli masticatori è da sempre argomento di dibattito, spesso acceso da empiriche osservazioni cliniche che suggerirebbero l’utilità di pratiche “gnatologiche” in contrasto con le raccomandazioni delle principali associazioni scientifiche internazionali. Nel corso degli anni, si è infatti reso inequivocabilmente evidente che la variabilità biologica individuale rende impossibile incentrare la terapia dei TMDs su concetti tecnico/strumentali, mentre è necessaria una comprensione dei meccanismi neurologici e psicologici che influenzano la fisiopatologia stomatognatica.
Sulla base di queste premesse, il VI Congresso Internazionale del Gruppo di Studio Italiano Disordini Craniomandibolari (GSID) è una fantastica opportunità per approfondire tutte le tematiche cliniche che ruotano intorno alla diagnosi ed alla terapia dei disordini temporomandibolari e di altre condizioni di dolore orofacciale.
La sfida che Steven Bender, Michalis Koutris, e Daniele Manfredini raccoglieranno insieme a Robert Delcanho e Luca Guarda Nardini è quella di guidare i partecipanti lungo un cammino che includerà informazioni eziologiche, si snoderà attraverso la presentazione dei sistemi diagnostici classificativi internazionali, e giungerà a suggerire raccomandazioni terapeutiche utili per la pratica di tutti i giorni. Nonostante la lunga curva di apprendimento necessaria (i pazienti con TMD non “invadono” gli studi odontoiatri generici, e questa mancanza di esperienza espone l’odontoiatra al fascino di filosofie biologicamente insensate), la certezza è che la riscoperta del ruolo dell’odontoiatra come figura medica passa attraverso una comprensione delle competenze da acquisire nell’era del dolore come malattia.

Congress presentation

Clinical management of patients with pain in the temporomandibular joint area and in the jaw muscles has always been a debated issue, often heated up by empirical clinical claims that would suggest the adoption of “gnathological” approaches that are in contrast with scientific recommendations from the main expert academies. Over the years, it has become evident that interindividual biological variability makes it impossible to focus TMD treatment on mechanical concepts, whilst a comprehension of the neurological and psychological mechanisms that influence stomatognathic physiology.
Based on these premises, the 6th International Congress of the Italian Study Group on Craniomandibular Disorders (GSID) is a wonderful opportunity to get deeper into the clinical themes around the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular disorders and other orofacial pain conditions. Steven Bender, Michalis Koutris, and Daniele Manfredini, together with Rob Delcanho and Luca Guarda-Nardini, will accept the challenge of guiding participants through the discussion of etiological information, the presentation of diagnostic and classification schemes, and the suggestion of management recommendations for the everyday clinical life. Despite the long learning curve that is needed in this field (TMD patients are not so frequent in the general offices, and this lack of experience exposes the dentist to the charm of biologically insensate philosophies), it is fundamental to try rediscovering the role of the dentist as a physician in the era of pain as a disease.
As per tradition, there will be a lot of interaction during the discussion slots, thanks to the classical format that characterizes GSID STEP approach to continued education:
